Weimaraner Temperament
Weimaraners are happy, loving, attentive and very rambunctious dogs. They are extremely intelligent, but can be very opinionated and willful, therefore a Weimaraner should have firm but gentle training from the start.
These dogs are quick learners but are resistant to repetitive and unstimulating training. .
The Weimaraner needs to live indoors as part of your family as they need attention and companionship just like us humans do. If left to kennel life or left alone too much, they could become destructive and restless. These dogs if properly cared for will reward you with loyalty and unconditional love.
By nature, these dogs are full of raw energy and should be first taught how to sit and then only praised when sitting. This will prevent jumping up in the future. It is very important not to discipline this breed by hitting as they can become wary too easily. Once they have a fear of something/someone they will look to avoid and training becomes very difficult.
This breed trains best when observing or copying other animals. Many German trainers work their Weim with an older, more experienced, well trained dog and let the breed’s copycat trait help reinforce learning.
Be prepared to enjoy a good 9 to 15 years with your new Weimaraner puppy, as this is the average life expectancy of this breed.
